His Dark Materials Series 3 - Episode 1

Beyond that little quip though, His Dark Materials returns with a solid chapter that promises plenty of action and thrills to come in the weeks ahead. Given this show has a strange release schedule, with the BBC dropping all episodes in one go next Sunday compared to the HBO releasing 2 episodes at once, the final season of this series feels a bit all over the place.

His Dark Materials Series 3 - Episode 1

The eight-episode first series premiered on 3 November 2019 on BBC One in the United Kingdom, and on 4 November on HBO in the United States and other markets. The seven-episode second series premiered on 8 November 2020 in the UK, and on 16 November 2020 in the US. The eight-episode third and final series premiered first on HBO on 5 December 2022, and on 18 December 2022 in the UK. All three series received generally positive reviews.

Before the series premiered, it was renewed for a second series of eight episodes, primarily adapting the second book in the trilogy, The Subtle Knife.[49] Filming of the second series began before the premiere of the first, which was considered "a necessary move considering the age of the show's young star".[50] While filming for series 2 was mostly completed before the COVID-19 pandemic, a standalone episode focusing on Lord Asriel was left unfinished. As a consequence the series ultimately only consisted of seven episodes.[51] Although McAvoy completed a small amount of filming before production was shut down,[52] his appearance in the second series's final episode was filmed during the pandemic, repurposed from material written for the abandoned episode.[53]

By November 2020, work had begun on six of eight scripts for a third series adapting The Amber Spyglass. The commission was confirmed in December 2020, for a series of eight episodes,[9][54] and production began in early 2021.[52] Filming for the third series took place between 24 May and 31 October 2021.[55]

Ben Lawrence of The Telegraph gave the first episode 4 out of 5 stars, calling it "a fine piece of drama, capturing the strangeness and childlike wonder of the books, but also their rigour and bite. This is intelligent populism writ large."[82] Huw Fullerton of the Radio Times gave the first episode a positive review: "While there is a slight element of table-setting in the series' first hour the appeal of the actors and setting are beguiling enough to pull you through all the exposition and explanation." Fullerton praised Wilson for her performance, saying she "nearly walks away with the whole series".[83] David Levesley of British GQ wrote that His Dark Materials as a whole illustrates the fundamental problem with remaking adaptations: "the execution doesn't feel far enough removed from the previous version to actually make for a significantly better product".[84]

Series 3 of His Dark Materials is the third and final series in the TV series. The series premiered on December 5, 2022 in the US and on December 18, 2022 in the UK. The series consists of 8 episodes.[1]

Episode 2, "The Break," at least moves the action forward, with Will and Lyra back together by the episode's conclusion. It also allows James McAvoy to start chewing on every piece of scenery available as he attempts to rally his troops to war. Henry V is not, but don't tell Asriel that. He's as convinced of his self-righteous cause to the point of delusional, unable to see anything beyond its borders. It's not like the show allows him any nuance either; there's no cost-sunk fallacy that one might see among those fighting a revolutionary cause that may fail, as one finds in better series like Andor. Perhaps that's out of the novel, but we are long past the point where sticking to the book is an excuse.

Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson are the heart of the series, and when they are together, it feels like nothing else matters. With only six episodes left, they are hurtling towards their destiny like an intention craft.

"Unless the Almighty Maker them ordain/His dark materials to create more worlds,--/Into this wild Abyss the wary Fiend/Stood on the brink of Hell and looked a while,/Pondering his voyage; for no narrow frith/He had to cross."

The final season of the fantasy series adapts Philip Pullman's novel The Amber Spyglass, with Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson returning as Lyra and Will along with fellow cast members Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, and Simone Kirby also back for round three. With Lyra and Will's fates more tightly intertwined than ever and a prophecy looming heavy over their heads, the stakes have never been higher. The eight-episode third and final season of HIS DARK MATERIALS will debut MONDAY, DECEMBER 5 (9:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) with two back-to-back episodes on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. Two new episodes will debut each week leading up to the series finale on December 26. 041b061a72
